Josefina Aguilar is a Mexican folk artist from Ocatlan, Oaxaca. Josephina and her sisters Guillermina Aguilar, Concepcion, and Irene, from the village of Ocotlan, Oaxaca, Mexico, are renouned for their painted ceramic figures. Works include small clay figurines, depictions of everyday village activities, religious and folkloric scenes, famous figures and Day of the Dead (dia de los muertos) statues. The Aguilar sisters learned the art from their parents as small children, and in typical folk art tradition, they each work together with their families and are in turn passing this legacy on to their own children. Collectors of their work include Nelson Rockefeller, who discovered her work on a trip to Oaxaca in 1975. in search of fine pieces for his collection . Clay figures by Sra. Aguilar and her sisters can be found among the important collections of Mexican folk art throughout the world.
